Enough of Ghosts
‘Getting to be a rough time for you.’
Wellingham is in Brussels on NATO
business when he's kidnapped. Mike and Willie's rescue mission
covers Brussels and the surrounding countryside. Later, Burnside
joins them on the continent.
Ghosts
Willie visits Tom Elliott's parents to tell them more ostensibly
about Tom's death. Burnside reminds Willie, ‘In our time
there's been one period of three and a half years when we never
lost a Sandbagger. There was another period of a year when we
never lost one.’ The period of three and a half years is
that between the deaths of Bob Judd and Jake Landy.
The period of one year is that between the deaths of Laura Dickens
and Tom Elliott.
The Shape of Things to Come
While in the Ops Room, Burnside says Wellingham ‘is no more
likely to defect than your or me.’ Little does he know that
he will have leaks with which to contend.
Secrets of the secret service
Diane rather eloquently describes the psychiatric profile of Sandbaggers
when she tells Burnside of their need to create a false person
‘who is more committed, more dedicated than anyone else.’
Personnel file
First of two appearances by Lady Jean Wellingham. Burnside's
divorce was over four years ago and he hasn't spoken to Lady Wellingham
in some time.
